Medium - Another Great Season

Posted by Joe in Medium Jake Weber

The finale is hard to comment on because I know that people in other countries have not seen it and I would not want to spoil it. It does have a lot of twists and turns. I very much enjoyed watching the way Glenn tells a story and the actors act it out. Now we have to wait through the whole summer for the next season. Maybe I will go back and watch the first season and write comments on those.
<br />Highlights, yes I did work at a startup company. Yes, I have patents for spacecraft components. Yes, the owners of the company got the lion’s share of the profits, but I got my share to. In TV land this took 3 or 4 episodes. In my life it took about 8 years.

You would have to talk to Allison about the crime story. It was, as usual, a very disturbing concept.

I do love how Glenn Caron lets us fill in details so the horror scenes are much more terrifying. In this episode there is a drowning, from the viewpoint of the person being drown. Despite not showing anything but water splashing on the lens of the camera, it is really powerful without being graphic. I suggest you watch it until the very end because in Glenn’s way he let our imagination fill in the picture for the soundtrack. This time it is not for a horror scene. There is about 10 sec of not so subtle, I can’t believe they did that, soundtrack at the end. I’m not telling if it is a true story or not!

One more thing, I guess someone is reading my little blog. Brian Gallagher over at movieweb.com interviewed Jake Weber (who plays Joe DuBois) and Kelly Preston (Meghan Doyle). It is a thrill to know that Kelly Preston and her husband are fans of the show.

Having met Jake a few times it was fascinating to see his take on how he plays the character. I don’t think about how to be Joe DuBois, but he spends time contemplating what it is to be in my situation. When he discusses it in an interview, I then have to take inventory of my own life from an outsider’s perspective. Specifically how I see Allison’s career as a medium. To me it is very much as Jake said, for Allison it is so much not a job to make money, it is much deeper and multi-dimensional. It effects her spiritually, emotionally, physically and this is all in context of the history of her life. It is all very surreal, but somehow healthy.

Jake was unaware of this blog, but Brian the interviewer was not. I will see Jake at the wrap party and maybe the interview will come up in conversation.

You can read the interview for yourself.

MediuM - Being Joey Carmichael

Thank you Glenn, you know the true Joe.

The Medium episode "Being Joey Carmichael" was kind of weird for me to watch. TV Joe learned a great lesson about himself and his wife. I re-lived learning those lessons while watching this episode. Allison is particularly good at knowing peoples intentions and knowing whensomething is being hidden. I have not been so aggressively approached, but given what Allison can do I don't have to be for it to affect her. Imagine going to one of Allison's book signings and having women ask me for my autograph on Allison's book!

I do like Miguel Ferrer's performance as twins. He was convincing as both cunning and devious Joey as well as sweet and kind and slightly mentally handicapped Teddy. In the end, we had to decide what was the ethical right and just punishment.

The photography involved with casting a single actor to play twins was very cool. One scene in particular was really great. Miguel handed himself a beer! In the same scene, one twin cast a shadow on the other yet they were played by the same actor. Bravo.

Remember to watch the season finale next week.

Best,
Joe

MediuM - "Car Trouble"

Firstly, contrary to popular belief I do get plenty of sleep at night. Allison gets most of her information while awake. Very seldom does she wake from a nightmare or other vivid dream. Like in the show, I sleep on the right and Allison on the left. I don't remember the writers researching that level of detail but suffice it to say they got it right. On the other hand, our phone is on Allison's side of the bed because the phone calls are usually for her. That is a matter of efficiency.

I watch the new episodes like everyone else, NBC on Monday nights with commercials and all. I have noticed that the commercials are getting a little more main stream. For a while there seemed to be a lot of sleeping aid commercials, which I personally thought was funny. I would like to see more beer commercials because I am a fan of beer although I don't drink it too often because it makes me fat. I am a fan of quality over quantity. My favorite is going to a German Restaurant and ordering an Octoberfest Bier with some sort of schnitzel or sausage.

As for the episode "Car Trouble" I can tell you some of my highlights. My favorite line is when Ariel sees the new car and says something like "is this the car I'll be driving when I'm 16?" Allison and I turned to each other and laughed because it is so true to our daughter's personality (She is turning 14 in 6 weeks).

Allison does get "feelings" for places and objects and most definitely people. My favorite memory about Allison and buying a car is not a bad feeling but a good one. Allison and I were driving to go to lunch and she said, lets go look at cars. I said "are we looking or buying?" She just smiled.

We had wanted to get a used car to save on the depreciation, but we did not want one more than 3 years old. When we got to the dealership the just pulled out a used car that was the right make, model and color and looked great. It had only 20 K miles on it so it was just what we were looking for. It turned out to be 7 years old. It was my lucky day! There were other customers waiting to see if our credit fell through because they wanted the car.

I do like that they show TV Joe working at a startup company and inventing things. I started my career at a start up. I was the 5th employee and when I left there were 300 plus. I have also invented many things, some have even been patented. They are always a little vague on the invention, something to do with solar cells. It does look a lot like something that we used on one of the satellites I worked on. I did not invent a solar array concentrator, but I know the guys that did http://www.aec-able.com/arrays/cellsave.html

Wow!! Have you guys been watching Medium this season. I know I am a little biased, but it has been incredible. Anjelica Huston, I don't know if I should love her character or not. Kelly Preston, just exactly what are her motives. Kurtwood Smith playing an FBI agent who is a vigil ante from the otherside. Joe is inventing things. And where is Ariel?

US Tour Kicks Off in Mesa, AZ

Posted by Joe in Untagged

“Well, I kicked off my tour in Mesa, AZ. On February 9th. It was so moving to see the audience reach out to the man that I read on stage. His story moved us all and I watched 700 people feel for him it was beautiful. We all laughed, we mourned it was a special day. So, thank you to all of the people that came out to the event. Thanks, to all of my staff and friends that made that dayso much easier for me. I had one really excited fan Angela that hollered to me that, “I rocked the house” she was so funny. We went to dinner at the Rokerij to celebrate and my kids were a sight for sore eyes. Next stop Atlanta, Georgia!”

Check out the pictures in the photo album

misbehave,

Allison's Racecar School

Posted by Joe in arizona

Buying Christmas presents for Allison is always hard. This year I did one thing she never expected, I listened. On her list of things to do before she dies is attend race car driver's school. Here in Phoenix we have the Bondurant driving school at Firebird Raceway. They advertise now and then and she would always say that she wanted to do it. On New Years Eve day they had a half day class in which the student get to drive four different cars. I took my Christma present (a video camera) and made this short video. I hope you enjoy it.

Allison's Interview with TV Guide

{mosimage}Excerpt from Allison's Recent interview regarding her new book.
Real-life Medium Allison DuBois Shares Secrets to a Happy Life by Craig Tomashoff
So far, Allison DuBois' life as a medium has been well done. Not only is she the inspirationfor the hit NBC series Medium, featuring Patricia Arquette as a barely fictionalized version of her, but she's also an accomplished author. With her third book, Secrets of the Monarch: What the Dead Can Teach Us About Living a Better Life, hitting stores this week, TVGuide.com talked to DuBois about living life as a medium and what everyone should be doing to feel more fulfilled.

TVGuide.com: Secrets of the Monarch is your third book. What is it about?

Allison DuBois: My first book was more about my childhood and how losing my father impacted me. My second book was more about people who lost a loved one and how I gave them a voice. It was advice for others who lost somebody. This book is about what the dead can teach us about living a better life.

TVGuide.com: What can they teach us?
DuBois: To not take everything so personally, and connect with other people without fearing rejection. Take risks in life. I talk about how some of the cases I've worked on the past few years have made me reassess my life and what I want to do with it. >> read full article
